Livestock Growers' dinner highlights accomplishments

2016 Cattlemen of the Year, the Lee family (Dan, Mary, Nick and Myles)

When our reporter came down sick and was unable to attend the Klickitat County Livestock Growers' award dinner on March 19, Brandy Myers was kind enough to provide the following summary:

The banquet was held at the American Legion in Goldendale. In addition to a wonderful dinner, we enjoyed connecting with our legislators, and honoring fellow neighbors and local 4-H and FFA kids.

The awards were:

Cattlemen of the Year: The Lee Family (Dan, Mary, Nick and Myles) Their field day will be held May 7, so mark your calendar.

OP Kreps Memorial Award: Doug Taylor

Jim Bridgefarmer Service Award: Kay Cameron

We had a house full of kids, which was perfect! The banquet was well attended by the Grand and Reserve Champion winners from the Klickitat County Fair, as well as the Steer of Merit winners: Callen Garner; Grace Hanning; Riker Hanning; Caitlyn Jaukens; Cassie and Curtis Kayser; and Riker Hanning. The top carcass honor was earned by Riker Hanning. The future looks bright for livestock growers based on the great kids we recognized.

Three memorial animal recipients were announced. This means the animals were donated for the kids to raise and sell at the Klickitat County Fair.

Joe Hassing Memorial Steer (donated by Columbia Bank): Michaela Browning

Jean Schilling Memorial Lamb (donated by the Rolfe Family): William Elliott

Jim Bridgefarmer Service Award winner, Kay Cameron (Center)

Bernice Thiele Memorial Hog (donated by the Thiele Family): Colton Troh

To end the evening the Cattlewomen had a live auction to support the local Beef Counts program; the auction and other activity for the night yielded nearly $2,000 towards this program. Beef Counts is a program designed to provide a consistent supply of high quality beef protein via Secondharvest. The Goldendale beef distribution will be held in the high school parking lot at the end of June.
