Samuel James Lewellen

 


Samuel James Lewellen, Jr. passed away April 10 at Flagstone Senior Living in The Dalles, Oregon. He was 82 years old. Sam was born September 24, 1933 to Samuel James and Louise Carolyn (Lemke) Lewellen in Guymon, Oklahoma. The family moved to Ontario, Oregon in 1935 where he was raised. In 1952, Sam entered the Navy and was honorably discharged in 1960 as SKG3-USNR- 4 year’s active and 4 years reserve service. He received Medals for good conduct, National Defense and China and Korean Services. Sam loved to hunt, fish and camp in the Blue Mountains at Maluer National forest in Oregon, at the family campgrounds. For many years, Sam worked as a truck driver, on a rock crusher and for Allied Waste. Locally, he worked for Ty Ross, Ed Layman and Edgar Holbrook, all he considered to be good friends. Sam was preceded in death by a son, Rick Lewellen, daughter Angela (Meech) Mares, brothers Wendel and Jerry, Father-in-law Bud Goodpaster, and great-grandson Alex Mares. Surviving family includes: Sam’s loving wife and best friend, Michelle (Micki) Lewellen of 40 years. Also, daughter Bonnie (Meech) Castillo and husband, Lt. Col. David Castillo of Havre de Grace, M.D. Their children Samantha, Chris, Kaitlyn, Sean and Shannon. Grandkids grandson Brandon Oliver of Goldendale, granddaughter Ashley Mares of Denver, Colorado. Two great-grandchildren Seth Nicely and Briseis also from Denver. Also surviving are brother-in-law Mike Goodpaster and family of Washougal, WA. Mother-in-law Velma Goodpaster of Hood River, OR, and sister-in-law Glenda Enderby who was a great help during Sam’s last days.
