Dumpster loads of refuse collected on city clean up day

“I was concentrating on elderly and disabled,” said Mayor Mike Cannon. And judging by the volume of refuse collected on Saturday, a lot of people got the help they needed for spring cleaning.

Goldendale held its annual community clean up. About 80 free coupons, donated by Republic Services, were handed out to Goldendale residents and an organized effort to visit those who needed help resulted in a productive day. Cannon credited Sherry Carter at Senior Services with developing a two-page list of people who needed assistance. The Masonic Lodge tabbed the event as one of their community service projects, according to Charles Bruce, who brought it to his lodge mates, and members showed up with pick-ups and bodies to help attack Cannon’s list. Also helping were a few high school students and dads and Donnie Hodges, who brought a huge trailer to collect large items.

It took less than two hours for the crew to fill up Hodges’ trailer and a large dumpster at City Hall. “The donuts were even cleaned up by 11 a.m.,” said Cannon.
