ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Bickleton senior Nathan Powers was named WIAA Athlete of the Week. Powers qualified for the State track and field meet in four events during Regionals at Wapato, Friday. His pair of wins in the hurdles included a 14.84 second time in the 110 meter hurdles, a new Bickleton school record. Powers won the event at State last year in a time of 15.97 seconds.

Nathan Powers ran a blazing 110 meter hurdle race at Wapato, last Friday, qualifying him for the State 1B track and field meet this weekend in Cheney. It was one of four events that Powers will compete in at State. The time for that race was an adjusted 14.84 seconds, which wiped out Powers' previous best time and broke the school record, which he already held. It also helped get him selected as the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIQQ) athlete of the week.

Each week throughout the school year, WIAA recognizes 12 varsity athletes, a male and a female from each of the six classifications, who exhibited an outstanding performance for the previous week. Powers, a senior at Bickleton High School was nominated by a community member and selected by WIAA staff as one of the Athletes of the Week for achievements in track and field. In addition to the 110 meter hurdles, Powers qualified for State in the 300 meter hurdles, high jump, and 4x400 meter relay.

In recognition of their accomplishment, each Athlete of the Week winner receives a congratulatory letter from WIAA Executive Director, Mike Colbrese, a commemorative WIAA State Athlete of the Week t-shirt, and a certificate. Winners are also posted to the WIAA website at wiaa.com.
