Back to the future: New SR 142 Klickitat Bridge

TROUBLED BRIDGE OVER WATERS: WSOT is making major repairs to the Klickitat River Bridge.

For the past four years, taking a trip across the State Route 142 Klickitat River Bridge has been like going back in time-but all that is about to change with construction of a new replacement bridge.

In 2012, a World War II-era Bailey bridge was placed on the structure to allow access despite severe deterioration of the 1950s bridge. That worked as a temporary fix, but it also restricted access to a single lane of one-way traffic. Starting next week, though, that will soon be a distant memory.

Today the Washington State Department of Transportation and its contractor, M.J. Hughes Construction, Inc., will begin working on a new replacement bridge that will reopen it to two-way traffic.
