Voter turnout called best in years


Washington counties report receiving nearly 1.5 million ballots as of incoming mail at the end of last week, a record total since the primary was approved back in 1989.

Klickitat County reported almost 50 percent voter turnout, returning 6,419 of 13,452 ballots mailed.

The total is nearly 36 percent of those issued. As of Thursday, 1.36 million of those had been counted and reported, for a turnout rate of 33 percent at this point. Ballots are still being counted.

The record percentage turnout is 42.6 percent in the 2000 Primary when 1.34 million ballots were counted. Turnout was 41.9 percent in 2008, with 1.39 million ballots counted. Both 2000 and 2008 primaries were conducted in Februar...
