DIGGING IN: Teams do all they can to restrain range cow long enough to collect a little milk during the Merchant Cow milking contest, which opened the Alder Creek Rodeo on Sunday.

The action started a little slow at the Alder Creek Pioneer Picnic and Rodeo last weekend. Saturday's rodeo was down some in numbers and according to one Bickleton native, the stock won over the cowboys.

Things picked up considerably on Sunday and the fans were treated to great competition and a number of event-winning performances. One of the most competitive events was the barrel racing where the top six riders were within 0.8 seconds of each other. Teri Bangart, of Olympia came out with a very compact ride for a 17.54 second time in the first run on Sunday. It ended up being the best for the two-days. The win paid off $716.30 for Bangart. The overall payout for the NPRA rodeo was $15,489.75 for the 161 entries.

Seven of 10 event winners came from the Sunday performance. Danny Alires, of Bickleton won the saddle bronc event with three of the four money winners coming from Sunday. All three money winners in bareback bronc came out of Sunday's show with Seth Shelton winning top money.

Two cowboys managed to get full rides in the bull riding with Hermiston's Cody Ford winning on the final ride of the rodeo.

The closest event was the steer wrestling where only two cowboys earned money and it would be hard to prove who really won. Austin Lindstrom got the nod with a time of 8.4 seconds. Levi Sherman was timed in 8.5 seconds. Another close event was the breakaway roping where Alexis Doutre, of Pendleton won with a time of 2.3 seconds over Scotti Erickson, timed at 2.5 seconds. The next two places were 2.6 seconds for Bailey Minor and 2.7 seconds for Jordan Minor.
