Kittitas edges Cougs

The Lyle-Wishram gridders scored first on Friday in Lyle, but a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns lifted Kittitas-Thorp past the Cougars.

The Cougars held the top team in the Eastern Washington Athletic Conference in check for 36 minutes until Kittitas struck on a five yard touchdown pass and later scored on the ground to go up 12-6.

Lyle-Wishram (1-3 overall, 0-2 EWAC) got the ball back with the clock running down, and drove down the field, coming within five yards of tying the game before turning the ball over on downs as the Coyotes (3-0, 2-0) ran out the clock.

Although coming up just short, Lyle-Wishram head coach Antoine Montoya was impressed and believes his team can still do some damage in the conference down the road.

“Overall I felt we were underestimated and we showed we can compete with the teams in our league,” Montoya wrote in an email. “We put up a great fight and I for one am proud of my coaching staff and team.”

Dasean Leslie connected with Brandon Montoya in the first quarter from 20 yards out for the Cougars’ first and only score. Leslie completed 10 of 16 passes for 110 yards and the touchdown, and also rushed for 40 yards.

Montoya ran for 31 yards and caught the one ball for 20 yards and Sam McCullough hauled in six receptions for 58 yards. Reco Quintero caught two balls for 17 yards and added an interception on defense.
