Be aware

It's that purple time of year! Programs for Peaceful Living would like to remind everyone that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The theme this year is Domestic Violence Action month, Together we can end Domestic Violence!

To emphasize the prevalence of domestic violence, here are some statistics from the annual one day census taken across the nation on Sept. 16: nationally, in that single day, nearly 72,000 individuals were victims of Domestic Violence; in the state of Washington nearly 2,300 individuals were victimized; and within our small two office agency—that covers all of Klickitat County we served four domestic violence victims and their families. One day, and that many folks came through the door! That may not sound like many cases, but when you think about it happening everyday (our agency has taken on 177 new cases since January) and considering that what we do for our clients is quite time consuming, in order to give each individual enough advocacy time, each visit can take up to two and a half hours or longer. And beyond that time spent in the office with the client, more time may be spent out of office finding community resources.

In observance of DVAM please show your support by wearing Purple every Friday, and also check out the purple frosted donuts at the Market Fresh bakery, in Goldendale—yum! All of Programs for Peaceful Living services are free and confidential. Office hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Contact information is 493-2662 for the Bingen office, and 773-6100 for the Goldendale office. The 24 hour crisis line is 844-493-1709. We are here in support of you!
