The real issue

How many of us know that initiative 735 will be on the ballot this November, or even what it is? Although The Columbian in Vancouver has endorsed the initiative, news about it has been mostly absent.

I-735, if passed, would make Washington the 18th state to formally support a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United, the supreme court decision that allows unlimited spending in political races. It would be a beginning step in a difficult process of amending the U.S. Constitution.

The process to amend the constitution must begin in Congress with a two-third vote of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Since all members of Congress either owe their seat to unlimited money or have figured out how to be elected in spite of it, Congress is unlikely to act on its own to start the process. By voting state by state to encourage congress to act, we can hope to get action.

A large majority of people consistently favor an amendment to restrain political spending. I-735 is an opportunity to demand that our representatives represent us. Please take this opportunity by voting Yes on I-735.
