Cougars fall on the road to DeSales

The Lyle-Wishram Cougars held an 8-7 lead after the opening quarter against DeSales on Friday in Walla Walla, but the Irish owned the second and third quarters en route to their 43-24 win over the Cougars.

With rain falling throughout much of the game, according to Lyle-Wishram head coach Antoine Montoya, the Cougars were able to control the tempo on the ground, rushing for 200 yards in the game, but were hurt from some early turnovers.

The Irish made it look easy on their first possession, according to Montoya, driving right down the field for an early 7-0 lead. The Cougs struck back shortly after when quarterback Jeremiah Ostrander found Brandon Montoya in the endzone from 39 yards out. Montoya scored on the two-point conversion giving the lead to the Cougars for the first and last time.

It was all Irish after that, who went up 10-7 after a field goal, scored again after stopping the Cougars on fourth down, forced an interception while the Cougars were driving the field and took a 24-8 lead into halftime.

The Irish added two more touchdowns in the third and led 40-8 before Ostrander hit Jarren Leslie for a 35-yard touchdown and Montoya added another two-point conversion. The Cougars scored again in the fourth, but it was too little too late.

Montoya rushed for 86 yards on the ground and added 70 yards and two touchdowns through the air, and Leslie added 35 receiving yards and a touchdown. Ostrander completed 8 of 14 passes for 129 yards and three touchdowns and the one interception.

Lyle-Wishram dropped to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in Eastern Washington Athletic COnference play, while the Irish improved to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

The Cougars conclude the regular season on Friday against the Mabton Vikings at 7 p.m. at Lyle High School.
