Cabinets get creative

WOODEN YOU KNOW IT: Ed and Vicki Woodruff stand in front of a cabinet set that will be on display at the Goldendale Home & Garden and Sportsman's Show. Ed makes the cutting-boards and other wooden items; Vicki is responsible for jars and pot-holders.

"It's in my head all the time. Sometimes I go home and dream about it-I'll have it figured out the next morning."

These could be the words of a chess player stymied by a difficult game, or a mathematician obsessed with a thorny problem. But they belong to Ed Woodruff, cabinet maker, and the object of his concentration is layout.

"Getting everything figured out so it fits. I'd say that's the most challenging part [of the job]."

It's a problem that's been on his mind for nearly 47 years.

Woodruff is pushing 64. He began his career at 17, working for a contractor who had a cabinet shop in Payette, Idaho. Building ran in the family, and Woodruff worked several years afterward for his father...
