Read, Lembke, 3 alternates reach regionals

GOLDENDALE GRAPPLERS:Senior Cameron Read grapples with Granger's Juan Zamora during the 195 pound finals on Saturday at Zillah Middle School.

As Goldendale head wrestling coach Matt Dumolt thought would happen, the Granger Spartans dominated Saturday's South Central Athletic Conference West district championships at Zillah Middle School.

Ten Granger wrestlers captured district titles and six more finished second while the Spartans topped the team standings with 331.5 points.

On the other side of the standings, however, were the Timberwolves, who finished sixth with 45 cumulative points and will be sending five wrestlers – three as alternates – to Saturday's regional tournament at Highland High School. The top four finishers from each weight class from the SCAC West and the five-team Cascade Conference advance to regionals while the fifth place finisher earns a spot as an alternate.

On Saturday, seniors Cameron Read (195) and Mykhail Lembke (160) punched their tickets to regionals with a second and third place finish in their respective weight classes, while senior Michael Jagelski, junior Dylan Denning and sophomore Brian Waddell just missed qualifying but will serve as alternates for Saturday.

It isn't uncommon, Dumolt said, for wrestlers to miss weight, or suffer an injury prior to the meet that allows an alternate to slip in and compete. That was actually the case for the Timberwolves on Saturday who were without two wrestlers, one who missed weight and one who didn't make the trip due to an illness.

That's been the case all season long it seems like for Goldendale, which had a handful of matches canceled and has lost a few key wrestlers throughout the season. However, that didn't stop the Timberwolves, who were still on the mats continuing to grind and help their teammates improve.

Despite Goldendale finishing last among the six SCAC West teams, it isn't that bad considering the Wolves have just one four-year wrestler and finished the season with just three seniors on the team, all three of which placed in the top five on Saturday.

Read was as close to a sure thing to reach regionals and state on the Timberwolves, and finished his afternoon of wrestling after being pinned by Granger's Juan Zamora in the second round of the 195 pound finals.

Read, who dropped a lot of weight over the previous month to drop from the 220 pound class to the 195 pound class, matched up with Zamora for the second time in as many weeks.

Despite being pinned in the second round, Read put up a little better bout against Zamora than he did during Goldendale's senior night match against the Spartans on Jan. 26. Zamora is slated as the No. 2 wrestler statewide in the 195 pound class, and finished second at last year's Mat Classic in the Tacoma Dome.

Read described wrestling at 195 as another world compared to wrestling at 220, but puts himself in better position to contend for a state title later this month by dropping a weight class.

On Saturday, he was able to pin his first opponent, Zillah's Brendan Rubalcaba, before falling to Zamora in the finals.

Along with Read, Lembke was the other Timberwolf to claim a secured spot in regionals after placing third in the 160 pound class. He suffered a tough loss at the hands of Naches' Kolten Reynolds in his first bout of the day.

He led Reynolds by 10 points before being pinned, which sent him into a loser's bracket bout against senior teammate Michael Jagelski for a spot in regionals. Jagelski had lost his first round match against Granger's Robert Vasquez to force the two teammates into a head-to-head matchup. Lembke came out on top in a decision that lasted all three rounds, and he later went on to pin Reynolds to finish third and lock up a spot at regionals.

Jagelski finished in fifth in the 160 pound class after pinning Reynolds in the third round of the fifth/sixth place bout and was one of three Goldendale wrestlers to finish fifth.

Denning (170) and Waddell (138) each pinned their opponents in their fifth/sixth place bouts and will be the first men up in their respective weight classes if any of the top four wrestlers in front of them can't make it to the regional tournament.

Goldendale's two girls, freshmen Faith Hastings and Jeeneeva Lawrence, were competing at Hanford High School in the South Division girls district tournament.

Hastings, competing in the 115 pound class, cruised to a first-round pin over Naches' Emily Heard in 50 seconds before falling to Davis High School's Cameron Guerin 1:20 into the second round. Guerin ended up taking the championship in the 115 pound class.

Hastings went on to pin Kennewick's Lauren Burton in 1:48 and was later eliminated from the tournament after being pinned by Kennewick's Jazmin Mercado via pin 41 seconds into the third round.

Lawrence dropped her first two bouts, falling to Grandview's Jairi Perez-Garcia and Hanford's Kaylee Shoup.

Boys final team scores: Granger 331.5, Zillah 270.5, Naches Valley 139, Cle Elum 101, Highland 78, Goldendale 45.
