The Goldendale Sentinel - Headlines & History since 1879

Which 'facts' do you want?

How important are facts in our lives? Consider the following: What if a doctor lied about a cancer diagnosis? What if your bank statement lied about the balance in your account? What if your child’s teacher lied about the grades your child received? I think we would be very angry if any of these were to happen to us. And yet—many of us are not concerned when President Trump lies again and again and again. This is not a way to make America great.

Simon Schama, a British historian, wrote, “Indifference about the distinction between truth and lies is a precondition of fascism. When truth perishes, so does freedom.”
