Nancy Frances Birch, 76, (Jan. 19, 1941 to Feb. 23, 2017) passed away on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2017, due to a stroke.

Nancy was born in Mountain Home, Idaho to Benjamin Franklin Bush and Mary Frances (Ormandy) Bush. She attended school in Goldendale and graduated from Goldendale High School in 1958. She earned two bachelor degrees from Portland State University.

She lived in the St. John's neighborhood of Portland for the past 47 years. She was a very private person, finding companionship from her pet cats. She could frequently be found taking early morning walks in the neighborhood, and having coffee at the neighborhood McDonald's. She completed the Portland Marathon as a walker on numerous occasions.

She was a lifelong swimmer. She lifeguarded and was a certified Red Cross instructor as a teenager in Goldendale, once resuscitating a child at the pool. She continued to swim early morning laps at Columbia Pool in Portland. She looked forward to the Roy Webster Cross Channel Swim at Hood River, which she completed annually.

She loved her career as a medical technologist and being part of a medical team. She worked at the Southwest Washington Medical Center lab for the last 26 years.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Clarence Birch.

She is survived by her daughter Michele Vowell; step-mother Lela Bush; siblings Bonnie Beeks, Michael McKune, Terry McKune, Susan Thomas, Darcy Taylor and Tracy Bush; grandchildren Zachariah Vowell, Isabella Gillespie, and Sarah Vowell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
