BUMP IT: Goldendale's Rachel Gallagher bumps the ball while Taylor Fahlenkamp, center, and Sara Hiebert look on during the U14 Gold's scrimmage against The Dalles last Wednesday at Goldendale Middle School.

Goldendale Volleyball Club's U14 Gold team continued its stretch of success into the opening day of the Northwest Jamboree on Saturday at Selah High School, but couldn't overcome a tough team from Spokane in the opening round of bracket play.

The U14 Gold cruised through bracket play with a 4-1 record before advancing to the Power Gold Bracket during the second day of the jamboree on Sunday. However, Goldendale hit a road block in the form of Spokane's Club South, which beat the Timberwolves in two sets and eliminate them from the tournament.

U14 Gold head coach Jennifer Mitchell said she was pleased with the way Goldendale played, but said Spokane was just too tough a team and played flawlessly.

"We definitely competed with them," Mitchell said. "They didn't just blow us out. We competed and fought hard."

The Jamboree featured 118 teams split into four age groups (U18, U16, U14 and U12) from across Washington and began with pool play games on Saturday and Sunday morning before bracket play. Based on the team's pool play record, they were split into three brackets, Power Gold, Power Silver and Power Bronze.

The U14 Gold reached the Power Gold bracket, which included the top eight U14 teams, but fell in the opening match to the team from Spokane.

CHAMPS: Goldendale's U12 Gold team poses after winning the consolation bracket on Sunday at the Northwest Jamboree in Yakima.

"They left it all out on the court but came up a little short," Mitchell said.

The team has a few weeks off before returning to action for the PNQ Tournament, which runs from March 31 to April 2 in Spokane. The U14 Gold finished up its season at the Evergreen Region Volleyball Association Regional Tournament, which runs April 22-23 in Spokane.

Goldendale's U12 Gold team also competed last weekend in Yakima, winning the consolation bracket on Sunday after an up and down day of pool play games in the group of 17 U12 teams.

They ran the table in the consolation bracket, winning three straight contests to finish their season on a winning note.
