Intense winds challenge Maryhill Loops riders

NEED FOR SPEED: Don Schoettler cruises down Maryhill Loops Road in his record-setting gravity car on Sunday. His car holds the record for the fastest gravity powered vehicle in the world, going as fast as 101 miles per hour.

What started as a calm, clear and nice early spring day on Saturday turned into a classic day in the Gorge on Sunday with high winds affecting the hundreds of riders that turned out for the Spring Free-4-All on the historic Maryhill Loops Road.

The words intense and gnarly were regularly thrown out among the 250 or so skateboarders, bikers, lugers and more who maneuvered down the 2.2-mile road dozens of times on Saturday and Sunday. Riders also talked about how the wind affected them, forcing them to take corners slower to avoid wiping out, although a handful of them joked and laughed about eating pavement and crashing into the protective hay bales.

The wind was even blowing hard enough...
