Monday, local law enforcement gathered on the lawn of the county courthouse in honor of National Peace Officers Memorial Day. The occasion, marking the start of National Police Week, is dedicated to all police officers, and especially to the memory of those who make the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Since 1867, 10 Gorge-area officers have been killed in the line of duty, including three from Klickitat County: Deputies Danny Kerr Vaughn and Michael J. McNabb, and Sergeant Peter D. Garland.
