New restrictions set for steelhead fishing on Columbia over the summer


In response to the projections for the lowest summer-run steelhead return in 37 years on the Columbia River, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife last Friday announced restrictions for steelhead fishing along the Columbia River Basin from June 16 to Oct. 31.

Fish managers are expecting only 130,700 summer-run steelhead to return to the Columbia this year, the lowest number since 1980.

In an effort to conserve the steelhead runs, the department is planning to reduce daily catch limits to one steelhead per day and prohibit fishing at night on the Columbia from the Megler-Astoria Bridge to the Highway 395 Bridge in Pasco from June 16 to Oct. 31.
