Grinders underway, drop first two at home

SLIDING INTO SECOND: Goldendale's Kobe Mitchell gets ready to put the tag on a Yakima runner during last Wednesday's doubleheader at Jackson filed. Mithcell, who used to reside in Goldendale, now lives in the The Dalles but comes down to play with the Grinders.

Opening the season with two games each on June 16 and 17 at the eight-team Hood River Tournament in Oregon, Goldendale Grinders assistant coach Ann Cochran said that nearly everyone from the 11-man team would be considered a pitcher during those initial four games.

Although there wasn't a limit to how many pitches each player could throw at the tournament, Cochran and head coach Rick Kauffman didn't want to wear out the young arms of the Grinders during the first week of the season.

The team dropped all four games at the tournament, playing against the likes of teams from Portland, Ridgefield and Newberg, Oregon.

They returned home last Wednesday for a pair of games against the Dirt D...
