O. Russell Smith

Russ was born August 22, 1935 in Neligh, Nebraska to Harry E Smith & Mary Ruth Sala. He passed away July 6, 2017. He lived and graduated from High School in Royal, Nebraska. He grew up with five siblings: Mary Brewer; and (preceded in death): Lurene Frey, Wayne Smith, Sterling Smith, and Joyce “Joy” Wilkerson.

Russ graduated from St. Paul Bible College—now Crown College, in 1958. At Crown College, Russ and Marilyn Dartt married in 1955. While employed at Boeing from 1958 to 1964, he served in the Arbor Heights Alliance Church. He resigned from Boeing when called to Pastor at the Alliance church in Langley, Washington. Following five years of service, became Associate Pastor at May Valley Alliance Church where he served for three years. Russ continued to serve in lay ministries throughout his life, witnessing to all he met.

Russ and Maizie have six children: Daniel Smith, Lynn Parrish, Christine Nichols, Richard Tangen (proceeded in death), Rick Tangen, and Sandi Beu. Together they have 13 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and numerous nieces & nephews. He treasured all of his family and friends.

Russ married Maizie in October of 1982 in Renton, Washington. They moved to Goldendale in 2001 following retirement from Metro Transit. Russ marveled at the beauty of the Columbia River to the view of the Cascade, the Simcoe and The Dalles Mountains, with the snowcapped peaks of Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens, and Mt. Hood.

Sickness and health issues were a reminder to Russ of how fragile life is and made him grateful for the gift of God’s loving grace and the joy of knowing and accepting God’s offer of eternal life. In the words written by the Apostle John—“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

We sincerely thank Hospice of the Gorge; Flagstone Assisted Living; and Bobbi’s Way Care Giving for the loving care provided. Special thanks to the Goldendale restaurants and churches that welcomed Russ and Maizie into their hearts and kindly served them. They both greatly appreciated and treasured the fellowship & friendships made here in the Goldendale Community.

A Memorial service was held at Community Grace Brethren Church, Goldendale, on Monday, July 10. Prior to the service he was laid to rest at Mt. View Cemetery in Goldendale at a family gravesite service.

Heartfelt thanks to all the family and friends who took part in these services and to the CGBC church who provided the meal after the service. To send condolences to the family, please visit
