County support was superb in fighting the Dry Creek Fire

August 2, 2017

I want to offer my sincere appreciation to the community members and businesses of your area during the Dry Creek Fire that started Friday, July 7, 2017.

The Klickitat County Sheriff's Office, Department of Emergency Management, Washington State Department, of Transportation, and Washington State Patrol were instrumental in conducting the evacuations and the closure of Highway 141.This was a very trying time for the Husum community, which, at the time, was also under a Red Flag Warning. The extremely hot and dry conditions were a true test for this local community, and I want to acknowledge the exceptional support that our firefighters received from the community. I cannot stress enough my personal gratitude, as well as the appreciation from all of us at the Department of Natural Resources.

We not only had a fast response from Klickitat County Fire District 3, but we also had outstanding cooperation with the local landowners. This effort minimized the private property loss and economic impact of this fire to a large extent.

To me, this was a win-win for our firefighters and the local community in collaborating

together for a successful suppression.

Thank you to Klickitat County and the greater Columbia Gorge community for their undying support to protect their community from wildfire.
