Pastor seeks progress on racism in area

Pastor Kathy Neary, new to the Goldendale United Methodist Church, has a tough job on her hands. She’s taken over as an interim pastor, here for only one year, from the previous pastor, an African American woman who departed Goldendale after a year of heinous treatment at the hands of virulent racists.

That treatment raised the hackles of local residents after a series of editorials about the matter in The Sentinel brought it to wider attention. The editorials sparked the most response the newspaper has had in decades, all of it pointedly against racism. And the topic is painfully fresh after national news in recent weeks.
