School shopping can still be done

September 6, 2017

School is back, and that means students and their parents are finishing up—or just starting, in some cases—their back-to-school shopping for the upcoming year.

For many families in Goldendale, back-to-school shopping consists of packing the family into the suburban or minivan and making the trek to The Dalles or Yakima to pick up the essentials that may not be available in Goldendale. But if you can’t find it here in town, you want to consider still shopping while staying home.

According to a 2017 spending survey by, Americans spend over $200 per child on back-to-school shopping, and nearly $430 per family. Factor in the gas money needed and the time spent to drive and then shop from store to store, the charges keep racking up for rural families who can’t get their shopping done in their town. By shopping online, families can locate sweet deals and save money without even getting out of bed.

Amazon is taking up to 80 percent off of essentials through today, for such things as school supplies, electronics and apparel. For those who are already Amazon Prime members, the deal gets even sweeter with the free two-day shipping on all orders.

For parents who are sending their child off to college, or who already have a child in college, Amazon has created a membership program called Amazon Prime Student, which gives college students a free six-month Prime trial. Like the regular Prime members, students will receive free two-day shipping on purchases, as well as unlimited streaming of Prime movies and TV shows and other exclusive deals. Once the six month trial has expired, Prime Student members are eligible to receive 50 percent off of the regular Prime membership.
