Cougars hang with 1A Stevenson, but drop first game 14-6

Cougar senior quarterback Jeramiah Ostrander tucks the ball and runs during Friday's season opener against Stevenson. The team's signal caller on offense and a defensive end on the other side of the ball, Ostrander is on the short list of players to throw for a touchdown on offense and sack the quarterback on defense in the same game.

It's still very early in the season, but if the Lyle-Wishram-Klickitat (LWK) Cougars football team cleans up some of the mistakes that head coach Antoine Montoya and the rest of the staff observed during Friday's 14-6 loss to Stevenson, they should be a very good team with a good chance of reaching the postseason.

That's not to say they aren't already a good team. The small Cougar team, with only 15 players suited up against the Class 1A and 45 person Stevenson Bulldogs, gave the larger school all it could handle in the season opener in Lyle.

In the opening quarter, the Cougars were able to keep the Bulldogs offense in check, forcing a turnover on downs on their opening defensive stand...
