Being the Village Gossip is bad for business

Years ago, when I was at The Washington Times in D.C., we did an interesting story on the National Enquirer. A spokesperson for that publication told us, “Every story we run is true—we’re just careful not to report ourselves out of a story.”

Translation: if you dig into a story only a little, being careful not to dig too deep, you can run just about anything. That is also why people generally buy the Enquirer for entertainment, not for news.
