Lessons in very valuable money

October 25, 2017

Rodger Nichols, news director for Haystack Broadcasting, gave a presentation on the history of money and coin collecting Thursday at the Goldendale Chamber of Commerce’s business luncheon at Ayutla’s Restaurant. Nichols is a life-long Gorge resident and has a passion for numismatics.

Numismatics is the study of, or collection of, paper currency or coins and other objects related to money. A numismatist is person who is a student and collector of old coins and currency.

Nichols displayed some of his old United States currency coins—dating back to the 1850s—and gave a brief history lesson on the evolution of U.S. money and the different historical coins that have come and gone over the years.

“I have been collecting coins since I was a kid,” Nichols says. “I don’t have a huge collection, but I tend to look for coins that are odd or unusual.”

Nichols says he has coins from 130 countries from around the world, and his goal is to try and collect one from each country.

Nichols is a member of the American Numismatic Association and has a lot of experience identifying the estimated value of old coins. His experience led him to helping attorneys put replacement costs on coins that are part of family estates.

“About eight years ago I was asked by an attorney to assess the value of some coins found in the estate for a family who inherited the coins,” Nichols says. “I can give a replacement value on the coins and that helps families know what they might be worth.”

Nichols says he works with attorneys three or four times a year and says it was something that just fell into his lap.

“An attorney knew that I collected coins and had some knowledge about them, and I have been helping with that ever since.” Nichols says.

After the presentation Nichols took time to evaluate coins that people had brought in for him to take a look at.

Nichols admittedly says that he is not a certified expert, but his life-long experience and knowledge of numismatics does qualify him to give estimated values on old coins.
