Trout Lake freshman Hannah Funkhouser, left, runs with Goldendale's Ellie Rising during Goldendale's home meet on Oct. 12.

A pair of Trout Lake freshmen cruised to runner-up finishes at the District 5 and 6 Class 1B/2B Championships last Wednesday at Walla Walla Point Park in Wenatchee, earning berths to this weekend's 1B/2B WIAA State XC Meet at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.

Justin Peck finished second overall by less than a second in the boys' race, while Hannah Funkhouser was one of two girls to finish in under 20 minutes at the state qualifying meet.

Peck cruised the five kilometer course in 16 minutes, 42.04 seconds, just finishing behind overall winner Justin Roosma, of Walla Walla Valley, who finished in 16:41.07.

Three other boys from Klickitat County also earned individual berths to state. Bickleton junior Michael Gannon will make his second appearance in Pasco. He finished 12th overall among the field of 88 runners, finishing with a personal-best time of 17:59.32, his first time breaking 18 minutes on a 5K course.

Trout Lake's Gabe Harpe came in next among local runners, finishing 14th in 18:09.7 and was followed by Bickleton freshman Christian Arriaga, who came in at No. 17 overall in 18:27.95.

Justin Peck runs during the Sept. 20 meet in Hood River.

The Mustangs finished fifth overall as a team, just missing a team berth at state. Bickleton finished right behind Trout Lake with 175 team points. The Mustangs had 142 team points and Liberty Bell won the meet as a team with 40 points.

On the girls' side, Funkhouser's 19:44.61 time was good for second place and a state berth. She was the only Mustang to advance to state, with only the top seven girls qualifying. Junior Joanna Peck finished just shy of the cutoff at 10th overall in 21:59.83. Freshman Lydia Harpe came in shortly after, finishing in 18th place in 23:08.68.

The Class 1B/2B girls state meet starts at 10 a.m. Saturday in Pasco with the boys a little later at 11:30.
