SERVING WITH HONOR: GMS students serve area veterans at the school last Thursday.

Goldendale Middle School (GMS) students in the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) treated veterans and their loved ones to a luncheon on Nov. 9, followed by a school assembly honoring those who served our country.

A brief history of Veterans Day was presented by a GMS fifth grader, and each veteran was asked to stand to be recognized for their service. A short bio of each veteran was read, including their branch of service, dates of service, rank and job title, where they were stationed, and what awards and medals they earned.

The GMS band performed for the event, and an honor guard presented the flag during the pledge of allegiance.

About 20 veterans from all branches of service-spanning 70 years-were present for the event, and students submitted questions to the veterans about their experience in the service and veterans shared some memories of that time.

The GMS leadership class helped organize the event, and Principal Dave Barta was the master of ceremonies.

This was the 13th year GMS has held the event.
