Court goes on fining for McCleary

The Washington Supreme Court will retain jurisdiction over the McCleary case as justices voted 9-0 on Nov. 15 on the proposed funding plan—passed by lawmakers last summer—determining that the state will not be in compliance with the court’s order by the September 2018 deadline.

The McCleary decision ruling in 2012 said that the state of Washington was not fulfilling its constitutional obligation to fully and amply fund all Washington public schools.

Attorneys for the state concede that the funding plan—based off property tax increases—will not be fully implemented by the deadline and that funds won’t be in place until 2019. The court will continue to hold the state out of comp...
