Senior Allison Gilliam drives to the basket amid a group of Royal defenders during Saturday's 51-41 win over the Knights. Gilliam scored in a variety of ways against the SCAC East school, knocking down shots from beyond the arc as well as from inside the paint. She also helped the Timberwolves close out the game in the fourth quarter with her free throw shooting.

The Goldendale girls shook off a slow start during Saturday's home contest against Royal and used big second and fourth quarters to knock off the Knights for the team's first win of the young season.

Bolstered by 24 points from senior Allison Gilliam and 19 combined points from Aimee and Ashley Bartkowski, the Timberwolves shook off an early first-quarter deficit and battled back for the 51-41 win.

The Knights scored the first five points of the game and kept the Timberwolves off the scoreboard for the first four minutes on Saturday, but Goldendale shook off its slow start with some baskets late in the first and throughout the second.

Gilliam got Goldendale on the board with her shot from long range with close to four minutes left in the quarter that made it 5-3 Royal, and Ashley Bartkowski and Kelli Bighorn also added two points each in the opening quarter as the Wolves trailed 11-7.

Royal's lead jumped to six early in the second, but it was short lived. Gilliam hit a tough 3-pointer early in the quarter, and did some good work on the offensive boards later on in the seconds that tied the game at 21 after her putback. Gilliam canned another triple moments later, and Ashley Bartkowski scored off an offensive board that gave the home team a 26-21 advantage heading into halftime.

The third quarter was another offensive struggle for both teams as they combined for 11 total points. The Bartkowskis did the heavy lifting offensively in the quarter, with four points coming from Ashley and two coming from Aimee over the eight minutes.

The Knights scored first in the fourth, cutting Goldendale's lead to 32-28, but the Timberwolves scored the next nine points to blow the game open and giving them a 41-28 lead.

The game then went to the line as each team shot a handful of free throws. Royal got within single digits at 45-37 after a 3-pointer, but didn't get any closer.

The Timberwolves struck for 19 points in each the second and fourth quarters, outscoring the Knights 38-25 over the pivotal quarters.

Goldendale also had to maneuver its way through some foul trouble that night with a few girls picking up early fouls.

A day earlier against South Central Athletic Conference East side rival River View, a slow start doomed Goldendale as they fell 60-35 on the road. The Panthers outscored the Timberwolves 21-7 over the first eight minutes.

Although Goldendale was able to put up more points in the second and third quarters combined (24-21), River View's defense held Goldendale to four points in the fourth.

Aimee Bartkowski paced Goldendale with 12 points on Friday while Delaney Peters scored a season-high eight points.

Last Tuesday against Stevenson, the shorthanded Wolves had another slow start in a 63-56 nonconference loss to the Bulldogs.

Without their top post presence in sophomore Kristin Bighorn, Goldendale struggled inside. Stevenson also played heavy defense on Gilliam, double teaming her for most of the night which freed up many of the other Timberwolves, including Aimee Bartkowski.

She took advantage of the open looks she received, erupting for a game-best 27 points while Gilliam still scored 14 despite the double teams.
