Welcome to new Community Council

December 27, 2017

We have a new Community Council! The board members are: Manijeh Baxter, Nick Fitzsimmons, Darren Michaels, Julie Larson, Oren Johnson, and Mark Harvey. Elections were not required, as these individuals stepped up to volunteer for their positions on the council. They represent many facets of our community, from parent to business owner to advocate to retiree and will be actively supported by at least 10 more volunteers that were present. Are you ready to help them out? It’s time now to get behind this organization and give it all the attention it needs to survive, and I can personally report that the board certainly needs all the support you can offer. Check out their new Facebook page under “Lyle Community Council”.

Santa came early this year to the Lyle Students. Class of 1960 Lyle Alumnus Robert Halverson, has gifted $35,000 to the Lyle School District in order to provide scholarships to graduating seniors. He’s hoping his gift will encourage other Lyle alumni to step up and invest in Lyle’s young people and challenges other “old-time grads” to contribute as well. The donation is being used to create a fund with the Gorge Community Foundation, where it will be invested and grow. Each year, the district will draw a portion of it to provide scholarships for those aspiring Lyle students with dreams of a higher education. The way the fund is structured ensures it will be sustainable and give generations of students support in achieving their dreams. It’s a great way to give a fellow Cougar solid foundation in life! Anyone who wishes to donate to the fund should contact the Gorge Community Foundation at (509) 250-3525, email Or contact the school at (509) 365-2191 for more information or assistance. Do you dare to answer his challenge? I double-dog dare you!

I guess you’ve heard by now that the Klickitat County Burn Ban has been lifted as of 10 a.m. Dec. 15. For information use this internet link:

or call (866) 211-6284 if you believe someone is illegally burning any time of year, or you are impacted by smoke from unknown sources.

I may be harping here, but—a few of the photos of children visiting Santa are still pinned on the Lyle P.O. bulletin board. Check them out. If you recognize a child, help me out by notifying the parent. They may not go to the post office often. And don’t forget the baby’s white satin slipper/shoe is still there. I don’t want to throw them away.

The Lyle Lions wish to shout out a heartfelt thank you to all the businesses, Lyle School staff and students, plus everyone who supported their 2017 Christmas Food Box Project, with their contributions of money, food, time, and energy. These donations helped fill each box with breakfast, lunch and Christmas dinner items for approximately 90 local households, and helped feed 330 people. They also wish you all to have a wonderful 2018! And don’t forget; their First Saturday Breakfast is a week from this coming Saturday, on Jan. 6. These breakfast fund raisers help support the many worthy causes the Lions do all year through.

And I wish to convey my sincere wish for you all to have a very Happy New Year!
