Mary Louise 'Charlie' Shattuck

Mary Louise "Charlie" Shattuck (87) of Toppenish passed away outside of Toppenish on Dec. 31, 2017.

Charlie was born on May 25, 1930 in White Salmon to Russell R. and Marie (Wyers) Kreps. She was raised and educated in Gilmore Valley in Klickitat County on her family ranch. She graduated from Columbia High School in White Salmon in 1948 and from WSU in 1952 with a teaching certificate. She taught one year in Walla Walla before getting married in 1953 to H.P. "Toppy" Shattuck. She taught Home Economics at Wapato High School before retiring in the mid-1970s. All this time she and her husband raised Hereford cattle west of Toppenish. She enjoyed this lifestyle and for the last 20 years she has helped her nieces and nephews gather cattle in Klickitat County and in the Blue Mountains. Charlie was an accomplished seamstress who enjoyed gardening and golfing.

She is survived by one sister, Olga Jane Hecomovich of White Salmon; numerous nieces and nephews; and two step-sons. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, and a sister.

Visitation for Charlie will be on Friday, Jan. 5, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home. At her request, there will be no formal services. She will be buried in the Bickleton Cemetery next to the love of her life.

Charlie suggested memorial contributions be made to the charity of one's choice. Colonial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
