Head Start taking applications

March 21, 2018

For families with young children, the Goldendale Head Start Program is now taking applications for the 2018-2019 school year. Head Start will be having a community open house March 26 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. to give families a chance to meet the staff, tour the building, and submit an application for enrollment.

Head Start Area Manager Traci Kessinger says it is a recruitment event to get the name out to the community and for parents to get a better understanding of what head start does and how it prepares children to be successful academically as they advance in their schooling years.

“It is a great chance to see what curriculum and learning tools we are giving kids, and a chance to get a feel for the program,” Kessinger says. “The more applications we get will show the need for this program and possibly give us a reason to expand and grow it.”

The open house will have craft activities for the children that incorporate math, science, and art as a teaching method. It will also offer a free vision and hearing screening for children by the health coordinator for Klickitat County. Children who attend will receive a free educational-based book. There will be refreshments and snacks served, and teachers will be on hand to answer any questions about the program.

“We use a very creative curriculum when teaching our students,” Kessinger says. “We will talk about all the things that we do and what methods we use, and share a little about our funding resources and how we can increase them.”

The Goldendale Head Start and Early Head Start programs enroll 58 children ages one to five, and Kessinger will need to fill close to half those spots by next year as the preschool children advance to kindergarten.

The program is for financially struggling families, and for children to qualify for the program the families must be under a certain income level. Information on qualifying for the program can be addressed at the open house.
