The Goldendale Sentinel - Headlines & History since 1879

Joseph Alva Isom

March 21, 2018

Knowing that my illness is progressing rapidly, I decided to relieve my beloved wife of the hardship of writing my obituary, I submit my own summary of life. I passed away at home in Goldendale on March 16, 2018.

I was born in Osseo, Wisconsin, August 23, 1944. My parents and four siblings moved to Richland, Washington, where my youngest brother was born. We moved to Yakima in 1959, and I attended Franklin Jr and Davis HS graduating in 1962. I enlisted in the Air Force and served three years in England at a Security Service Air Base. After my enlistment, I worked as area representative for U-Haul. I graduated from Columbia Basin College and attended Eastern Washington University. I worked at Lakeland Village and transferred to Washington State prison system at Geiger Heights, Spokane, as counselor. In 1980 I worked for the Benton County Sheriff's Department. I eventually returned to Spokane and became the Executive Director of PreVocational Training Center.

November 5, 1994 was the best day of my life when Glenda Green accepted me as her husband. We opened our own business in Goldendale (Thumper's Fast Lube) and worked it together as a "ma and pop" team for 11 years until health problems necessitated my retirement. For a few years, I was able to assist my beautiful wife in her new business, "Barn Boards and Lace."

I am survived by my beautiful wife Glenda; my daughters JoAnne (Sheridan, Wyoming) and April Munyon (Spokane); step daughter Stacie Anderson Oswalt and step son John Damon Anderson; 10 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. I am preceded in death by my parents Howard K. and Hazel B. Isom; much cherished sister, Diane; and brothers David, Miles, William (Bill) and little brother and life friend Terry. Surviving all of my siblings has resulted in anguish and extreme sadness with regrets of things I should have said and done. Now I will be provided the ultimate opportunity of experiencing the truth-only wishing I could share that truth with you.

There will be NO funeral, NO celebration of life. However, I desire that my wonderful wife be comforted by her loving friends. Keep your money and make no donations on my behalf. I shudder at the possibility of any businesses profiting from my demise! Lol.
