Raising Alpacas for fun and profit



EXCEEDING LEGAL CUTENESS LIMITS: These kids are enjoying a face-to-face with alpaca friends.

Ten years ago, my husband Pat and I began a post-retirement adventure which most folks would seriously question. Instead of touring the USA in a motor home or cruising to exotic islands in the Pacific, we decided to start an alpaca farm. I'm sure our grown kids and our neighbors thought we'd gone off the deep end.

After falling in love with a fuzzy, friendly young alpaca at the Goldendale Farmers Market one Saturday, we visited local alpaca farms, asked lots of questions, and said, "This is for us!" After Pat built a small three-sided barn and fenced in an acre of land, five alpaca girls, four bred, were delivered to us in October 2007.

Four babies, called crias, were born uneventfully...
