Candidate filing week is here

This is candidate filing week in Washington. Candidates may file online at vote.wa.gov/klickitat or in-person in Room 203 at the courthouse in Goldendale. The cutoff for online filings is 4 p.m. Friday, May 18; in-person filings must be received no later than 5 p.m. Friday. There are 68 local offices open for election, 58 of which are precinct committee officer positions that allow voters to get involved at a grassroots level.

The primary election is on Aug. 7, at which the top two vote-getters in each race will move on to the general election in November.

What do elections cost? Brandie Sullivan is the Elections Admistrator for Klickitat County Auditor Brenda Sorensen. We asked her to provide a breakdown for the Feb. 13 special elections involving money measures for seven school districts. Overall costs looked like this:

Salaries and wages, $10,383.44; Personnel benefits, $4,354.32; supplies $1,388.82; other services and charges, $5,489.51, for subtotal of $21,616.09. Subtracted from that total is the $50 fee charged to each district, totaling $350. That brings the cost down to $21,266.09. The final additional charge is 15 percent for overhead, which adds $3,242.41, for a grand total of $24,858.50.

Some of the costs included running notices in The Sentinel and The Enterprise ($168 and $171.55, respectively), $1,745.44 in stamps, and $1,706.70 for maintenance on the voting system. Most items were inexpensive, such as $95 for the initial canvassing meeting and $95 for certification.

Costs per district varied from Roosevelt with 90 registered voters at $412.80, to Goldendale School District with 4,809 at $19,042.60.

Sorensen said there have been many inquiries this year, and if they all turn into candidates or measures, it will be a busy election season. But she said she isn’t worried because, “I’m proud of my hard-working, dedicated staff.”
