Mary Stearns

Family and friends, we lost our Mom (Mary Stearns) on Saturday night, May 19, 2018. Mary was born on February 13, 1938 in Oxford, Nebraska, to John Peebles Ralston and Thelma Lou Ralston (Nelson). Our Mom was the most loving, caring and patient person, and we were so lucky to call her "Mom." Mom went thru the 12th grade in Orleans, Nebraska. She then went off to Hastings, Nebraska, for three years and her senior year moved to Nebraska State University where she graduated, her major being in Music-Vocal.

Mom grew up loving to sing. She sang all her life between college programs, plays, funerals, and weddings. She married Dennis Stearns in 1958 and they moved to the Northwest after they fell in love with the region after honeymooning out here. Dennis and Mary had three children, whom I might say all grew up to be exceptional beings! Mary started teaching music at the Primary School in Goldendale, and that turned into 32 years of teaching second grade. She so loved each and every student she came in contact with. She decided to retire after teaching the third generation of many of her first students! After retirement, Mary was staying very busy with many hobbies. Mom loved to quilt, visit family, puzzles, yard sales, and going on long drives. I think that her highlights were the times she would travel to Disneyland and Disneyworld with her youngest, J.D.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Laird. She is survived by her three children: Denise (Dino) Stearns, her spouse Jana, (Dallesport) Dan Stearns, his spouse Deb (Hereford, Arizona), and J.D. Stearns (Portland, OR). As much as she loved her kids, her two dogs, Oliver and Maggie, were her favorites! She also has two grandchildren, Jeremy Rowland and Nicole Stearns; and three great-grandchildren, Raef, Bodhi, and Zacky.

Mary belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma (32 years), PEO and Red Hats.
