May 5, 1887

Henry Timmerman, the man confined in jail for murdering Lorenzo Sterling and his wife, awoke a few nights since and was considerably startled to hear what sounded very much like someone sawing a hole in the wall; he listened attentively and for a moment his imagination ran as high as 100 degrees in the shade. He could not ascertain from which direction the noise came, and as the guard could not be seen from the bunk in the cell, alternate visions of a mob, and friendly deliverance floated before his eyes. He stood the suspense as long as he could, when springing out of bed, he discovered that the sheriff had come in with his blankets and laid down on the floor, and was snoring...
