Coffey says donations taken out of context

Chris Corry, Republican candidate for Washington House of Representatives 14th Legislative District Position 1, says his Republican opponent Kathy Coffey has made donations to Democrats Jay Inslee, Patty Murray, and the Democratic Party in Yakima County and claims the donations reveal a conflicting agenda. Coffey says the small donations need to be kept in context and considered in light of the thousands of dollars she has contributed to Republican causes.

“I think it is fair to say that Jay Inslee’s policies have been bad for Central Washington, and these donations make it is clear to me that Kathy Coffey doesn’t share the values that are important to me and to our district,” Corry stated.

Coffey says she has been a Republican “all of my life, and I’ve made dozens of contributions, thousands of dollars, to Republican causes.” Of the donations made to Democrats, she says Inslee was an acquaintance—“we were both in Selah together,” she says—and she was approached by him when she was in a non-partisan position. She calls the donation to Patty Murray a similar situation. Coffey says the donation to the county Democrats was in connection with a Christmas dinner.

Coffey’s contributions were: to Murray in 2010, $125; to Inslee, $350 in 2016 and $500 in 2013; and $100 to Yakima County Democrats during the 2016 presidential campaign.

“You don’t give money to causes you don’t agree with,” Corry stated, “so it concerns me that my Republican opponent has consistently made donations to Democratic campaigns throughout the years.”

Coffey says the donations should be kept in perspective compared to the thousands of dollars she has put behind Republican causes. She adds, “As mayor of Yakima, and before that as a member of the city council, I knew that sometimes you have to reach across the aisle. Anyone in politics knows that.”
