August 1, 2018

FINDING COMMON CAUSE: Goldendale's Sarah Gould attended the United National Indian Tribal Youth (UNITY) conference last month. Here a group of Native youth stands before the organization's sign.

From July 5 to July 9, eight Native American youth from Goldendale and Celilo Village stayed in San Diego, California, for the 2018 United National Indian Tribal Youth (UNITY) Conference. According to UNITY, Inc., "UNITY is a national network organization promoting personal development, citizenship, and leadership among Native American youth." Initial estimates predicted just over 1,800 attendees for 2018, but there ended up being 2,400, making San Diego the largest conference yet. Local youth who went comprised members of the Big River Youth Council (BRYC): Tyrell David, Jaime Elwell, Eddie George III, Sarah Gould, Marissa Heemsah, Tyler Heemsah, Jaycene Jackson, and Joellene Sargeant.
