Jeff Fields, Keith Grundei win club championships

August 1, 2018

Jeff Fields finished on top of the gross leaderboard during last weekend's Men's Club Championships at the Goldendale Golf Club. He shot a 76 over 18 holes on Saturday and followed with a 73 on Sunday for a two-day, 36 hole total of 149.

Bearing the scorching temperatures over the weekend at the Goldendale Golf Club, Jeff Fields, Brian Enstad, David Ross, and Keith Grundei were on fire over 18 holes on the links during the Men's Club Championships on Saturday and Sunday.

Fields, tied with the lowest round of the 13 golfers after shooting 18 holes on Saturday, held off Bill Payne and David Ross on Sunday to capture the Men's Club Championship with a two day, 36 hole gross total of 149 strokes.

Fields and Ross finished the first day of 18 holes even at 76 strokes and both followed with another strong round of 18 on Sunday. Fields finished up with a 73 and Ross a 74 on Sunday, giving Fields the one-stroke advantage for the club championship.

Finishing with 149, Fields edged out both Ross (150) and Payne, who also finished with 150 strokes after a furious Sunday rally brought him one stroke off the lead.

Payne started out his 18 holes Saturday with an 81, but followed it up Sunday with the lowest gross round of any golfer over the weekend. His 69 on Sunday brought him back up the leaderboard, but he ended up just one stroke back of Fields for the championship.

After Fields, Payne and Ross finished top three in the gross, Brian Enstad (154), Mitch Anderson (168), and Rich Holycross (183) followed. Matt Anderson shot a 77 over the first 18 holes Saturday, but that was the only round he played.

For the net, which is a golfer's total score after handicap strokes have been deducted, Enstad and Ross finished in a tie at the top of the leaderboard with a 136.

Keith Grundei tied for the gross lead among seniors with Ted Wilkins over the first 18 holes on Saturday, following it up Sunday with the lowest round again to finish as the gross senior champion over the weekend.

Grundei and Wilkins ended Saturday tied atop the senior leaderboard with 79 strokes before Grundei pulled away after his 80 strokes over the final 18. His 159 stroke total was the top gross score, with Wilkins following with a 167 over the 36 holes.

After Grundei and Wilkins, Roger Telford (171), John Crossland (177), Doug Miller (183), and Richard McCulley (186) rounded out the seniors in the gross standings.

Although he was runner-up in the gross standings, Wilkins was able to come out on top of the net standings with a 36 hole total of 143.

After Wilkins' 143, Crossland was second with a net of 147, Telford and Miller followed with 149, and McCulley next with a 158.

Coming up at the Goldendale Golf Club is the Member Guest Tournament, which runs Aug. 18 and 19.
