Fire forces people from homes

LAND ON FIRE: Last week's fire along Highway 14, shown here on the first day, ended up burning about 15,000 acres.

A fire that ended up burning nearly 15,000 acres started in the late afternoon last Tuesday near Wishram and Highway 14, prompting level three evacuations from the Klickitat County Sheriff's Office for several communities in the county.

Roughly 75 residences were affected by the evacuations both in Wishram Heights and south of Centerville, including Pat's Ranch Mart. In the end however, no structures were lost or damaged by the fire, which burned on private, U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Indian Affairs lands and was fueled mostly by fast-burning grass, according to the fire's public information officer Michael Krueger.
