Leora June Layman

September 19, 2018

Leora (Lee) June (Hartvigsen) Layman (better known as Grandma Lee), born on June 27, 1920 in Downey, Idaho, to the late Luetta Brown Hartvigsen and the late Neils Hartvigsen, passed away at age 98 on Aug. 21, 2018 in Bend, Oregon.

She graduated from Downey High School in 1938. Leora was preceded in death by her son, Miles Terry Elam; brothers, Vernon, Nels, Arnout, and Clinton; and sisters, Amelia, Jennie, Luetta, Deloris, and Fannie. She is survived by her son, Todd Layman; daughter, Kristine Layman Smalling; grandchildren, Misty Elam, Tanner Smalling, Tiffany (Layman) Cupp, and Daphne Layman; and great-grandchildren, Charlie Layman-Cupp and Emma Cupp, as well as numerous others she took on as her children and grandchildren.

Grandma Lee loved quilting, sewing, knitting, baking (especially her awesome bread), reading, pets, and being a great mother and grandma. She was a member of the LDS church. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary, and a volunteer at American Red Cross. As a career early on, she chose waitressing and bartending to make ends meet, as well as the one job she referred to as colorful and interesting but would not name. Above all, she was the best at being a homemaker and raising her children.

She will be fondly remembered for her great jokes, wonderful stories, mischievous laugh, and for her famous line when asked her age, “Age is just a number and mine’s unlisted.”

Friends and family members may attend the celebration of life service on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at McMenamins Old St. Francis School, Father Luke’s room, 700 N.W. Bond, Bend, Oregon. For all who wish to attend, please bring your favorite memories of Lee and be sure to include a bright splash of color or leopard print in your attire in memory of the bright spirit who blessed us all.
