The Lyle-Wishram-Klickitat Cougars picked up where they left off on the gridiron, crushing Crescent 60-0 on Saturday in Joyce to remain undefeated at 2-0.

Traveling to Joyce, one of the state’s northernmost points, for a 2 p.m. Saturday game, Cougar head coach Antoine Montoya knew the team had to deal with a couple of tough Crescent running backs. In Crescent’s first two games, a couple of their backs rushed for over 100 yards, including a 233 yard, four touchdown performance from senior Noah Leonard.

He knew they would be tough to stop, but also knew the Cougars had the better back and one of the top players in the state in junior Brandon Montoya.

The Cougars, however, were able to neutralize the Crescent rushing attack nearly all game while dominating on the ground when they got the ball.

Split between six rushers, the Cougars compiled 418 yards on the ground led by 304 yards on nine carries from Montoya. Montoya also reached the endzone five times on the ground and also added a 35 yard touchdown reception off a pass from senior Kurtis Billette.

After stopping Crescent and forcing a turnover on downs on the game’s first possession, Montoya took the ball 53 yards into the endzone just two plays later and the Cougs didn’t look back.

They led 22-0 after the first, took a 38-0 lead into halftime and cruised to the end of the game with 22 points in the second half.

Defensively, Montoya got to the Crescent quarterback for sacks three times and added 10 tackles. Junior Sam McCullough also was tough defensively for eight tackles, while Billette finished with seven. Sophomore Robbie Door and freshman Tyler Kroeskop also added a sack each.

The Cougs will be in Lyle on Friday for their home opener, matching up with 1-2 overall Liberty Bell. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday.
