Sophomore Jules Libbrecht pressures White Swan's quarterback during Goldendale's 40-14 win over the Cougars on Sept. 7.

Goldendale head football coach Aaron Cochran knew entering last Friday's road contest with the La Salle Lightning would be a tough matchup for the young Timberwolves.

He said the Lightning are one of the top teams in the conference and should compete with the Zillah Leopards for the league title.

Last Friday in Yakima though, the veteran Lightning team gave the Wolves trouble on both sides of the ball, handing the road team a 49-0 defeat.

Goldendale was tasked with slowing down La Salle quarterback Kieran Kershaw, who recently was named one of the WIAA's athletes of the week and is a threat on the ground and through the air.

Kershaw accounted for three of La Salle's seven touchdowns, two through the air and one on the ground, and helped the Lightning get out to a big lead over the Wolves.

La Salle went up 35-0 after the first quarter, but the Wolves limited them to a touchdown each in the second and third quarters.

The young Timberwolves, shorthanded more than usual after a couple guys were banged up after the White Swan game, moved the ball well at times but the La Salle defense was too overwhelming.

Sophomore running Lucas Black totaled 80 yards on the ground on 16 carries and freshman Bryce Waddell finished with 14 yards on two carries along with two catches for 13 yards from junior quarterback Corbin Bland.

Up next

The Wolves are back at home on Friday, but face another tough test.

With kickoff set for 7 p.m. Friday at Barthlow Field, the Wolves will have their hands full with SCAC West rival Zillah.

The Leopards sit at 3-0 overall with wins against Evergreen High School, Ellensburg, and Naches.
