Sheriff 's Office raids Mexican cartel pot grow near city

TOO CLOSE TO HOME: The Klickitat County Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with other agencies, raided an illegal marijuana grow operation run by a Mexican drug cartel. The yellow oval to the right indicates the area north of Rock Creek where the raid took place.

The Klickitat County Sheriff's Office seized close to 24,000 illegal marijuana plants belonging to a Mexican cartel last month in a huge raid near Goldendale.

Sheriff Bob Songer indicated his office had hoped to keep the raid out of public view while it continued investigations, though a story on the raid did appear last week in The Yakima Herald. The sheriff's department released news of the raid on Friday.

On Aug. 29, the Sheriff's Office, working in conjunction with the Washington State Patrol, Bureau of Land Management, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, raided the illegal marijuana grow about 13 miles east of Goldendale.
