Centerville waits for word

The Centerville School hasn’t heard officially on whether or not it will be a recipient of special funds to help schools survive the glaring inadequacies of the McCleary legislation, but things look promising.

Centerville School District Superintendent Ann Varkados says her understanding that the state Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) will make its final list of Hold Harmless schools—those which will share in a total fund of $12 million—soon, but final word has not yet come.

The fund is designed to allow only a few districts, likely 10 in all, to receive help in offsetting what is being called a levy swap incurred by McCleary. The state Legislature passed a...
