Goldendale futsal teams kick off new season in The Dalles

December 5, 2018

A pair of Goldendale teams had been working for the last couple weeks trying to adapt to a new game that many weren’t familiar with.

On Sunday, both teams were in The Dalles for their initial futsal games, a version of indoor soccer that’s played on a basketball court with a slightly heavier ball. But despite both teams falling in closely contested games, head coach Mike DeMott said he was more than happy with how the teams competed on the court.

The older team, consisting of Austin Williams, Alejandro Contreras, Justin DeMott, Tiana Watson, Josie Quantrell, Jaiden Royce, and Ashlyn Muzchenko, fell 7-3, while the younger team, comprised of Natasha Muzchenko, Kali Watson, Contreras, Alden Williams, Austin Williams, and DeMott, dropped a 9-6 decision.

The older team, which plays in the sophomore and older classification, has a couple girls from the high school team as well as a few boys.

“They played against all boys high school players and really held their own very well,” Mike DeMott said in an email to The Sentinel. “They were happy with the result given the clearly higher skill level from the boys.”

DeMott said all the other sophomore and older teams are comprised of just high school boys players, but playing against those tougher teams should only help the Goldendale improve each and every week of the futsal season.

“Older team had the right attitude,” DeMott said. “They will learn from seeing these boys who play together a lot. It’s a quick pace with good ball control that most girls have never seen before in person.”

The younger Goldendale team in in the freshman division, but most of that team is made up of eighth graders. DeMott said that team was a little nervous before the game and also that if they come ready to play on Sunday, then they should have a lot of success.

“If that group comes out next weekend with less jitters I’m confident they can win some games,” he said.

On Sunday, the younger team will play first at 4:10 p.m., followed by the older team at 6:40. All games are played at Chenoweth Middle School Gymnasium in The Dalles, which is located at 3718 West 13th St.
