Pirates pick up first win at home Monday over Cle Elum

December 12, 2018

The Bickleton Pirates got a taste of the South Central Athletic Conference West with a pair of contests against teams from the Class 1A division over the last week.

Last Friday, the Pirates were in the Valley for a matchup with one of the top teams in the state’s junior varsity squad before picking up their first win of the season at home on Monday against the Cle Elum Warriors.

Bickleton was in Zillah last Friday for a contest with the Leopards JV, but had a tough time slowing them down in the 67-42 defeat.

On Monday, the Warriors made the long trip to Bickleton and the Pirates came out firing, scoring 24 points in the first quarter en route to a 66-57 win over the Class 1A team.

Cle Elum

After opening with 24 points in the first eight minutes, the Pirates slowed down a bit in the second, but also held Cle Elum to just 19 points throughout the first half.

Bickleton again came out strong to start, but this time in the third where Dakota Riggs scored 13 points and Cesareo Arriaga knocked down a pair of 3-pointers that helped the home team build a 54-31 lead.

The Pirates held them off in the fourth, and improved to 1-3 overall on the season with the win.

Arriaga led the Pirates with a game-best 27 points to go with 10 boards, four assists, and five steals and Riggs finished with 15 points and recorded three steals.

Christian Arriaga knocked down three 3-pointers and added 14 points for the Pirates, who also got seven points from Michael Gannon, two points from Ethan Mains, and one point from Mandy Roberson.

Zillah JV

Over the last couple of seasons, the Zillah Leopards have been contending for the state title year in and year out.

Last Friday, the Pirates got a look at the next wave of Leopards after matching up with their junior varsity squad, which cruised to a 67-42 win.

Zillah 21 10 21 13 - 67

A slow start and tough fourth doomed the Pirates in last Tuesday’s road contest at Touchet, as the Indians outscored the visitors 19-9 over the final eight minutes of the game for a 53-45 win.

Bickleton scored just nine points in the opening frame and nine points in the fourth quarter after picking up its play in the middle two quarters.

After falling behind 22-9 after the opening eight minutes, the Pirates clawed back in the second and third and took a 36-34 lead into the final eight minutes but couldn’t hold on after the Indians rallied to take the lead for good.

Cesareo Arriaga led all scorers in the game with 25 points and also had 18 rebounds and three steals and Christian Arriaga finished with eight points and three steals. Gannon also had six boards for the Pirates.
